Privacy Policy

Last updated: 30 August 2026

1. Who we are

Get Ahead Gifts ("we", "us", "our") is an Australian independent business (ABN 74 895 038 288) providing a gift-reminder and gift-discovery service. This policy explains how we handle personal information under the Australian Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

By using the service you consent to the handling of your information as described here. If you don't agree, please don't use the service.

2. Personal information we collect

  • Account information: your email address, and — if you sign in with Google — your name and profile picture. We receive these from Google; we never see your Google password.
  • Information about other people that you enter: names, nicknames, relationship, birthdays and other occasion dates, interests, gift notes, gift history and any photo you upload. This is the core of the service, and you are responsible for having a reasonable basis to store it (see section 9).
  • Your preferences: reminder lead times, budgets, priority flags, shortlists and gift plans.
  • Optional sign-ups: your email address if you register interest in something we're still building (for example personalised gift boxes or the gifting concierge).
  • Messages you send us: the content of contact-form messages, feedback and emails.
  • Technical and usage data: IP address, browser and device type, pages viewed, referring page, and which gift links you click.

We don't ask for and don't want payment card details, government identifiers, health information or other sensitive information.

3. Why we collect it and how we use it

  • To create and secure your account and keep you signed in.
  • To store the people and dates you save and calculate when reminders are due.
  • To generate gift suggestions matched to the interests, age, relationship and budget you enter.
  • To send the reminder and service emails you've asked for (see section 4).
  • To understand which pages and gift ideas are useful, so we can improve them.
  • To detect, prevent and investigate abuse, fraud and technical faults.
  • To answer your questions and respond to privacy or deletion requests.

We do not sell your personal information, and we don't sell or rent our email lists. We don't use the details you save about other people to market to them.

4. Email reminders and other emails

  • Reminder emails go to the email address on your account, ahead of the dates you've saved, at the lead times you choose.
  • Service emails (sign-in links, security notices, important changes to this policy) are part of holding an account and can't be switched off while your account is open.
  • Optional updates — for example launch news for something you registered interest in — are sent only if you asked for them, and every one has a one-click unsubscribe.
  • You can change your lead times, pause reminders for any person, or turn reminders off entirely from your account at any time.
  • Our email delivery provider processes your email address and the contents of the message solely to deliver it on our behalf. We may record whether an email was delivered or failed so we can fix delivery problems.

5. Cookies, analytics and affiliate tracking

Essential cookies and local storage. We use these to keep you signed in and remember basic preferences. The service can't work without them.

Analytics. We use privacy-conscious, aggregate analytics to count page views and clicks so we know which guides and gift ideas are useful. We use this at an aggregate level and don't use it to build advertising profiles.

Affiliate tracking. When you tap a "Shop" link, we log the gift slug, a timestamp and the page you came from on our side. You are then redirected to the retailer through an affiliate program's tracked link. That program and the retailer may set their own cookies on your browser to attribute a purchase to us — this happens on their domains, under their own privacy policies, and we never receive your payment details or your order contents. We may receive de-identified, aggregate reports (for example "3 sales this month").

Your controls. You can clear or block cookies in your browser settings at any time, and use your browser's tracking-protection settings. Blocking essential cookies will sign you out; blocking affiliate cookies won't change what you pay. See our Affiliate Disclosure for how commissions work.

6. Third-party services we rely on

We keep this list short on purpose. We use trusted providers to:

  • host the website and run our managed database, authentication and file storage;
  • send transactional and reminder email;
  • provide optional Google sign-in;
  • measure aggregate site usage;
  • operate affiliate link tracking and redirects.

These providers may access personal information only to perform those functions for us, under contract. Some of them, and some retailers you click through to, operate or store data outside Australia (including in the United States and the European Union). Where information is disclosed overseas we take reasonable steps, as required by APP 8, to ensure it is handled consistently with the APPs. We do not disclose your personal information to anyone else except where you ask us to, or where we're required or permitted by law.

7. Storage and security

Data is stored in secure managed databases with encryption in transit. Access is restricted by row-level security so each account can only read and write its own people, notes, shortlists and plans, and staff access is limited to what's needed to run and support the service. No system is perfectly secure, but if a data breach likely to cause serious harm occurs, we will notify affected users and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) as required by the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.

8. How long we keep it — and deletion

  • While your account is open: we keep your account details and the people, dates and notes you've saved so the service works.
  • If you delete something in the app (a person, a note, a plan), it is removed from your account immediately and purged from backups in the normal backup rotation, generally within 30 days.
  • If you delete your account: your profile, saved people, notes, shortlists and plans are deleted. Some records may be retained where the law requires it, or in de-identified aggregate form (for example click counts that can no longer identify you).
  • Interest and waitlist emails: kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove you, and no longer than 24 months of inactivity.
  • Support emails: kept up to 24 months so we have context if you write again.
  • Technical logs: kept for a short period (typically up to 90 days) for security and debugging.

9. Information about other people

The service works by storing details about people in your life. Please only enter information you have a reasonable basis to hold — the kind of thing you'd keep in your own contacts or calendar — and don't add sensitive information about someone else. If a person you've saved contacts us and asks us to remove their details, we may ask you to delete them, and we can action the request ourselves if needed.

10. Your rights

Under the APPs you can ask us to give you access to the personal information we hold about you, correct it if it's wrong, or delete it. Email us and we'll respond within 30 days. Access is free; if a request is unusually large we'll tell you about any cost before we proceed. If we refuse a request we'll explain why in writing.

You can also do most of this yourself: edit or delete any person from their profile, and delete your whole account from your account settings.

If you're not happy with how we've handled a privacy issue, email us first and we'll try to fix it. You can then complain to the OAIC at oaic.gov.au.

11. Children

Get Ahead Gifts is intended for people aged 16 and over, and we don't knowingly create accounts for children. Birthdays you store about a child (for example your niece or nephew) are treated as your own contact data, not as the child's account.

12. Anonymity

You can browse our guides and gift shortlists without an account. An email address is only needed for reminders, because reminders have to be sent somewhere.

13. Contact us

Privacy questions, access requests and deletion requests: hello@getaheadgifts.com.au. Post: Get Ahead Gifts, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. We'll acknowledge requests within 5 business days.

14. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top always shows the current version, and material changes will be flagged in-app or by email before they take effect.
